In 1977 Steve Took began to form a New Band "The Horns". He spent some considerable time auditioning, and working with musicians determined to find a line-up which was full of highly talented people. By November 1977, after many trials, a suitable line-up had been found including at it's backbone, Ermanno Ghizio-Erba on Drums & Trev Thoms providing some serious Lead Guitar. |
"Steve Took's Horns" recorded at Pathway Studios and produced a Master Tape of three songs which have never been released: 'It's Over', 'Average Man' & 'Woman I need'. At the time, a rough-mix demo version of the mastertape was made.
After the break-up of Steve band the following year three of the four members were 'snapped up' by Nik Turner which enabled Nik to form his new band "Inner City Unit".
The Line-up of 'The Horns' at the time they worked in Pathway, was:
STEVE TOOK VOCALS/GUITAR;
(JUDGE) TREVOR THOMS LEAD GUITAR;
ERMANNO GHIZIO-ERBA (DINO FERRARI) DRUMS;
STEVE (SPEED MACHINE) REDMAN BASS; (info on his autobiography with 'Took Chapter' can be found Here)
JAMIE ROBERTS KEYBOARDS.
In the over 25 years which have elapsed since Pathway a handful of people have heard copies of the rough-mix 'Demo'. We were fortunate that due to friendships with two of the original members of "Steve Took's Horns" we were able to hear the songs. The "Horns" sessions are the Best Recordings of Steve Peregrin Took we've Heard! And everyone was agreed that they MUST be heard!
CD BOOKLET ARTWORK Fee of Mercury Moon designed the booklet cover as a comic, styled on a 1977 issue of 'The Beano' comic. She sent an copy of this to Took's friend Mick Farren who said "Great work. Is the whole booklet a comic?" Until that moment "No!" But then "Yes!" How could we disappoint Mick Farren especially when the idea of cartoons inside was such a terrific one.
Left:- Horns CD Cover. Right - Took, Judge Trev and Ermmano as they appear in their own cartoon strip.
We were very fortunate to get the services of a very appropriate artist to draw cartoon ''episodes" of the 'Story of the Horns Album' for the CD booklet. The artist's name is Andy Hemingway and he has done a number of art pieces for Twink & Nik Turner. Therefore as they were both Took's friends it is very in keeping for him to do this. The CD booklet is sixteen pages of full colour with cartoons on almost all pages telling the tale of the Horns from conception to CD release. The booklet also includes an essential reading biography plus lyric sheets.

TWO TOOK-PENNED SONGS FEATURING RON TREE FROM HAWKWIND Ron Tree recorded the bass for the two Took-penned songs: 'Too Bad' and 'Ohh My Heart'. The vocals for both songs were laid down by Ron Tree & Judge Trev. Original 'Horns' drummer Ermano laid down the multi track drums for both tracks. Judge Trev laid down the rhythm guitar on both tracks while Ron's thundering bass is simply amazing as are the vocals by both The Judge & Ron.
JUDGE TREV DONATES A SONG TO THE HORNS ALBUM Original 'Horns' member and friend of Steve Took's (they shared a flat during 'The Horns' era) Judge Trev Thoms has donated his song 'Mountain Range' as a Bonus Track for the forthcoming album. He wrote this song about Tookie and their experiences during the 'Horns' period making it very appropriate and poignant.
|ADDING HORNS TO 'THE HORNS'|
Original 'Horns' guitarist Judge Trev laid down additional guitar overlays to the alternative mixes, while the horns (excuse the pun!) were recorded by Royal College of Music Trumpet player RICK WELSH (NIK TURNER'S ALLSTARS/INNER CITY UNIT).
ORIGINAL MASTER TAPE When the 'Steve Took's Horns' session Master tape was transferred to A-DAT format, we were delighted to discover not only the three tracks we knew of which had been transferred to cassette so that Took and his manager could try and secure a record deal, but the multi-track drum, rhythm guitar, organ and other instruments which were mixed down to two backing tracks (left and right) used to record the main session. Also there was some 'sections' of earlier 'takes' and an alternative 'live take' of 'It's Over' where Tookie improvised some of the lyrics! All good fun stuff!
